austin-family-medicine-Adrenal-FatigueAre You Tired for No Reason and Have Trouble Getting Up in the Morning?

You may have a syndrome called Adrenal Fatigue. I began learning about Adrenal Fatigue last year because “traditional medicine doctors” do not understand it nor is it taught in medical school. However, the integrative medicine doctors and functional medicine practitioners have known about it for decades. This article is designed to be the first part of a series about Adrenal Fatigue. It will focus on the symptoms and evaluation.

What are the Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue?

  • Tired for no reason
  • Difficulty getting up in the morning
  • Insomnia
  • Waking up frequently at night
  • Needing caffeine all day
  • Feeling exhausted in the afternoon
  • Feeling energized right before bedtime
  • Feeling run down / stressed
  • Exhausted after a workout instead of energized

What other medical problems does Adrenal Fatigue cause?

  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks
  • Depression
  • Low thyroid or Suboptimal Thyroid
  • Low T3 and High Reverse T3
  • Weight Gain or Difficulty Losing Weight
  • Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue can also cause metabolic changes such as high cholesterol and elevated blood sugar (diabetes) because of its profound effect on your energy levels. Without adequate energy, most people tend to not exercise and eat more sugar in order to stay awake. This leads to a host of medical problems stemming all the way to strokes and heart attacks if left alone for too long.

How do I get tested for Adrenal Fatigue?

You can take a free online quiz published by Dr. Wilson (one of the experts in the field). The quiz takes 15-30 minutes to complete. It can be found here:

If you take the quiz, save and print the results. Bring them to your appointment. I will review the results, and we will store them in our computer system in order to compare them with the new and improved you down the road.

Although this quiz does not clench the diagnosis of Adrenal Fatigue, it can tell you how your symptoms score on a scale of minimal, mild, moderate, or severe.

If you are concerned that you have Adrenal Fatigue, your next step is to get formal testing with a salivary test kit. Yes, it is a saliva test using saliva (or spit) from your mouth. The kit measures your cortisol levels four times throughout the day in order to get an accurate picture of your cortisol curve.

  1. The first sample is collected within 30 minutes of awakening.
  2. The second sample is collected before lunch (or around noon).
  3. The third sample is collected before dinner (or around 6pm).
  4. The fourth sample is taken right before bedtime.

The salivary test kit currently costs $120 and is not covered by insurance.

Why should I get tested?
