What is Stem Cell Therapy and What Can it Do For Me?
Stem cell therapy is a relatively new and pioneering non-surgical solution for a variety of medical conditions, including chronic pain, sporting injuries and even sagging skin. With short treatment time and minimal downtime, for many it is a convenient and highly effective procedure that can transform their lives for good. So, what exactly could stem cell therapy do for you?
What is stem cell therapy?
Stem cell therapy is the process of taking healthy cells from the body, commonly from blood, fat or bone marrow, and injecting them into localized areas to treat specific conditions. The healthy cells get to work stimulating new cell growth in the injected area, thus healing and repairing damaged cells.
The procedure can take up to four hours in total, and begins with healthy cells being harvested from the patient, either by drawing blood to collect Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), taking a sample of adipose (fat) cells via liposuction, or collecting bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMAC) from the hip. Depending on the condition being treated, sometimes a combination of these cell types are collected. The cells are then prepared to be re-injected into the treatment area.
Pain is minimal, and local anesthesia is used where necessary to minimize discomfort, particularly when collecting bone marrow. Patients may experience a little aching in liposuction areas and may experience some mild swelling in the injected areas which quickly subsides within a couple of days. In the subsequent weeks, the beneficial effects of stem cell therapy will then begin to reveal themselves.
Our own family doctor, Dr. David Sneed, has developed his own interpretation of stem cell therapy, called BodyStem™. This office procedure uses a combination of PRP, adipose stem cells and BMAC to deliver a comprehensive treatment to heal and regenerate damaged tissues. BodyStem™ is such a versatile procedure that Dr. Sneed currently uses it as a treatment for a huge range of chronic pain conditions.
Stem cell therapy for chronic pain
One of the most common applications of stem cell therapy and BodyStem™ is to treat chronic pain. Pain tends to occur as a result of an injury of some kind that hasn’t healed correctly. Sometimes, injuries may appear to have healed, only to cause chronic pain and stiffness several years down the line. Too often we resign ourselves to this type of pain as a side effect of getting older or of injuries from our youth, but BodyStem™ can have astounding effects on chronic pain and allow people to be free from the pain that has plagued them for decades.
Muscle and ligament injuries
Severe muscle and ligament injuries can take months or even years to fully heal, and in some cases, tissues may not ever completely regenerate. Since BodyStem™ is designed to deliver a high concentrate of new, healthy cells and growth factors to a targeted area, it can help to speed up the healing process and help tissues to repair more successfully than they would without intervention. By encouraging the area to heal faster, it also means that patients can improve the range of motion in the injured area in order to progress through physiotherapy quicker and get back to their normal routine as soon as possible.
An alternative to joint replacement
Those with chronic pain in joints who are considering joint replacement surgery could find BodyStem™ a less invasive and more affordable method for managing their pain. Although joint replacements are a fantastic solution for alleviating chronic pain caused by arthritis or historic injuries, they involve general anesthesia which is a risk in itself, particularly for those who are elderly or have other underlying health problems. They also require full hospitalization and it can take up to six months of physical therapy for the joint to fully heal, during which time movement is often restricted and pain continues to occur. BodyStem™ is a fraction of the price of a full joint replacement, requires no hospitalization time and minimal downtime, with pain dissipating within just a couple of days.
StemGlo™ for aging skin
As we age, it’s perfectly natural to experience sagging skin and wrinkles as our tissues tend to lose volume due to collagen production slowing down. Stem cell therapy is a fantastic solution; by injecting high concentrations of PRP into problematic areas, skin cells can be regenerated and collagen production increase to leave skin looking smoother, more plumped and more youthful. Dr David Sneed has adapted stem cell therapy specifically for skin aging in a procedure called StemGlo™ which is available as Aesthetica Medical Spa. The entire procedure takes as little as 30 minutes and is very similar to cosmetic filler treatments, with minimal downtime and rapid results.
